Project: The Route 72 Causeway in Ocean County, New Jersey connects Long Beach Island with the mainland, carrying traffic over the Intracoastal Waterway on the Manahawkin Bay Bridge and three trestle bridges. It is located in Stafford Township and Ship Bottom Borough. Major Improvements are needed to maintain this vital lifeline for Long Beach Island residents and visitors. The Route 72 Manahawkin Bay Bridges Project involves the construction of a new structure parallel to and south of the existing Manahawkin Bay Bridge, rehabilitation of the existing Manahawkin Bay Bridge, and the rehabilitation of three trestle bridges over Hilliards Thorofare, East Thorofare, and West Thorofare.
This presentation will focus on the following three Contracts:
Contract 3 – East and West Thorofare Bridge Rehabilitation: this Contract includes pier cap rehabilitation, bearing retrofits, piling protection system, repairing and resurfacing the bridge decks, new parapets, and deck joint repairs; February 2015 start date
Contract 4 – Existing Bay Bridge and Hilliards Thorofare Bridge Rehabilitation; work on the Existing Bay Bridge includes a complete demolition and reconstruction of the superstructure elements, existing pier spall repairs, abutment wall reconstruction, and scour countermeasures around the existing bridge abutments; Hilliards Thorofare Bridge will receive similar repairs as noted under Contract 3. Early 2016 is the anticipated timeframe for advertisement.
Contract 5 – Environmental Mitigation: this Contract includes wetland creation, mitigation for freshwater wetlands and retrofit of two existing stormwater basins within the Barnegat Bay watershed, and public access improvements; December 2014 start date
