Project Information:  Route 18 over Route 1 Rehabilitation Project

The NJ Route 18 and US Route 1 interchange in New Brunswick, Middlesex County, New Jersey is one of the most congested in the State as it involves traffic from 2 high-volume State highways and is a major connector to the NJ Turnpike. The existing bridge decks were in poor condition and needed replacement. Also, widening of Route 18 northbound to eliminate potential merging conflicts between Route 18 northbound traffic and New Jersey Turnpike traffic was included in the project work to eliminate backups on Route 18 and the New Jersey Turnpike.

The presentation will discuss the development of an innovative staging scheme that combined ABC elements, such as Prefabricated Superstructure Units (PSUs), movable barrier curb and median crossovers with the use of a contraflow lane and 57-hour weekend construction windows to minimize impacts to motorists under heavy traffic conditions. Other aspects of the project such as: Replacement of lighting systems and overhead sign structures;  Installation of drainage facilities, guide rail and Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) facilities; Relocation of existing utilities to facilitate the construction; and Issues encountered to date during construction will be discussed.
