The presentation will introduce the concept of adaptive signals and how they can be used to improve traveler mobility. The chronology of the project delivery process to design adaptive traffic signals on state highways in NJ will be outlined and discussed. Specific design elements such as image detectors, radar detectors, and roadside units will be examined. The presentation will conclude with examples of adaptive signal deployments in NJ.
Kelly McVeigh is a Principal Traffic Engineer with over 6 years of experience working for the New Jersey Department of Transportation in the Transportation Mobility (TSM&O related) section of the Department. During that time Kelly has gained experience in Traffic Incident Management; Planning and Strategizing for Traffic Operations; Designing and Operating Advanced Traveler Information Systems including Travel Time Systems; and performing Systems Engineering Analyses for ITS-related work. Currently, Kelly is one of the Department leads in Adaptive Traffic Signal System Design, Construction, Testing, and Operations. In this capacity, he uses the Systems Engineering Process to design Adaptive Traffic Signal Systems to meet the Department’s and other stakeholders’ needs. Kelly received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil Engineering from Rowan University in 2011 where he was introduced to the field of Transportation Engineering, which would spark further interest in the world of Transportation Systems Management and Operations.
