Route 206 Bridges over Stony Brook

Princeton, Mercer County, New Jersey

Built in 1792, the Stone Arch Bridge over Stony Brook in Princeton is the oldest state-owned bridge in New Jersey still in use. The triple-arch stone bridge was built by local masons and carries vehicular traffic for Route 206 in Mercer County. A partial collapse of the parapet and spandrel wall of the Stone Arch Bridge forced the bridge and section of roadway to be closed on February 22, 2016. Emergency repairs were performed to allow for the continued use of the bridge while advancing design and coordination to identify the most feasible and practical methods for a much-needed, more-thorough repair. Preserving the historic features of the bridge and the historic districts included within the project limits played a prominent role in executing the design and construction. The presentation will review the project from inception of the emergency repair, to rehabilitation options and coordination with stakeholders and agencies, through reconstruction of the Stone Arch Bridge. Other project features will also be reviewed including replacement of the adjacent “Flood Channel Bridge” and needed repair to the “Worth’s Mill Ruin Wall”. The project was featured on the Roads & Bridges website.
